Boys 16&U National Club Championships– Mark Oberman, Coach
This year the Boys National 16&U Club Championships were held in Brisbane Sept 26- Oct 2. The boys represented the club with great commitment, enthusiasm and determination. We were ranked 13th going into the tournament and my expectation was that we would improve on that ranking. We lost our goalkeeper 3 weeks prior to the tournament as he unfortunately fractured his leg in a basketball incident. We went into the tournament with the expectation that our field players would have to rotate through that position, and I might say the commitment to their teammates was nothing short of sensational. Both Jayden and Eoin should be singled out for their exemplary way they stuck to the task given they are not goalkeepers, and I would like to particularly thank them.
As expected, we progressed through to the top 16 with a first up loss against Sunshine Coast and then 2 decisive wins against Tamworth and Melbourne Collegians. In the next round we drew Cronulla, River City and Hunter. With that draw it was conceivable we could progress to the top 8, an excellent result. After another decisive win against River City we lost to Cronulla and then to Hunter. The game against Hunter was the winnable game yet it was our strength, our defence, which let us down leaking 15 goals in that game. We scored enough to win with 12 goals but as the old adage goes, defence wins games. From there we progressed to the 9-16 group and had a decisive win against SA Jets (a state team) 15-4, a loss against Carina 10-5 and a final emphatic victory against Sydney University, 9-2, to finish 11th, which was an improvement on our ranking, and a magnificent way to round out the tournament.
The boys have grown very close over the course of the winter and the tournament, and resemble a tight knit unit capable of forging a bright future for the club. We have some exceptional players within the group, and the standards the boys adhere to are dictated from their captains Matt and Lewis right through the group. It is pleasing to see the amount of responsibility and cohesion this group has to achieve the results they are capable of.
I would like to thank the house parents for their input and assistance over in Brisbane. Rory, Bridgette, Gavin and Sue were magnificent in their cooperation preparing and looking after the boys throughout the tournament. I would also like to thank Karl and the committee of Triton for their continued support of the boys. While they do a fantastic job, it is worth noting they also require assistance and if any of the parents and supporters can help out it would be very much appreciated. What we do not want is that too few do too much. Clubs are based on volunteers and we continue to require volunteer help, so do not wait for someone to approach you, go and approach someone at the club and ask how you can help make this club great. I look forward to the upcoming season where we can expect
competitive teams in all grades from juniors to seniors. Exciting times lie ahead for this club, get on board and experience it!
Thanks Mark and all involved for taking the boys away and congratulations to you all for your strong performance. We should all be inspired by this young group of athletes who trained consistently through the cold winter months. Good job!
